Don’t think animation extends beyond Sunday morning cartoons? Think again! Commercials, action movies, Web sites, video games, engineering, and even medicine all use animation. All of this spells promising careers for those earning degrees in animation and design. Want to join them?
Why Your Mom and Counselor Were Wrong
Perhaps you always wanted to become an animator, but your mom or guidance counselor dissuaded you from doing so. “Animation jobs are for artists who don’t take their careers seriously.” Sound familiar? Sure, it made since in the 1960s or 1970s, but it’s a new world. Technology, business, entertainment, sports, science, and medicine will never be the same, thanks to animation pros.
The Rise of Animation Jobs
Animators are in high demand these days, though the field has changed. Gone are the days of sketchbooks and graphite. Today’s animation relies on advanced computer technology requiring extensive training and certification. Earning a degree from an art school, computer science program, or graphic design university is the quickest and most pragmatic route to a great animation job. True, there are employers who might take you on talent alone, but do you really want to compete with an application pool where everybody but you has a degree, not to mention a substantial portfolio of completed assignments?
Different Types of Animation Jobs
There really is no shortage of outlets when it comes to animation. Many work in advertising to create enticing commercials that allure unsuspecting consumers. Others work in Hollywood making sure that blockbuster movies continue to enthrall. And still others work in science and technology, mapping out uncharted regions, such as the human body or space. With the right training, the possibilities are endless.
