The New York Times recently published an article that shed light on the cultural revolution that recently occurred within Disney's animation studio. Last April, animators within Disney split into two very distinct camps - those who used computers to produce animation, and those who preferred the more traditional hand-drawn method.
Computer Animation Causes Cultural Revolution at Disney
Each side of the debate was adamant about their preferences, but the animators were presented with revenue numbers from their competitors whose movies were made with computer animation. The numbers didn't lie - computer animated movies were definitely bringing in much more money that traditional hand drawn 2D animation. Some key animators on the traditional side backed down and said they would try to work with computer animation for the sake of increasing revenues.
Since that time, Disney has been creating a number of computer-animated movies. It is counting on its latest movie, "Chicken Little," to reverse its falling revenue trends, and revitalize Disney's position as a leading computer animation studio.
