By Kelly Richardson

The list is out and public health is on the hot seat. We find out the fittest and fattest cities of 2005, and you will be surprised at just which cities made which lists. If you are concerned about public health in your city, here's how they were chosen and some of the more notable stand outs.

To be completely honest, it seems as though every media outlet has its own list of which cities are healthy and not. But there are some cities that come up time and time again as winners and losers in the search to find the locales with the best overall public health. Criteria measured in these public health surveys include air and traffic quality, access to public parks and facilities, and availability of fast food.

Cities that are Public Health Surprises

  • Aloha. The city of Honolulu stayed near the top of every online list as one of the best public health cities in the country.
  • Junk Food Heaven. On the other hand, Baltimore showed up on the low end due to the number of fast food establishments in the area.
  • Up and Down. The city of Boston was thought to have good public health by some, but not so good in other rankings.
You can make a difference in the public health rating of your city by earning a public health degree from a local university or online program. A public health degree will give you the credentials to make key decisions about the health care of people in your town. Here's what you can expect with a public health degree.

A Public Health Degree

  • Environment. Earning your public health degree will have you working in medical facilities of all sizes and types.
  • Outlook. There will always be a need for public health professionals with advanced degrees to tackle our society's health woes.
  • Education. The typical degree in public health is a three-year online degree in a distance learning environment.
Choose to earn a public health degree through an online program and start making a difference in your community.
