Cable Stations Fuel Film Industry Job Growth

Considering a career in film production or cinematography? Now may be a great time to start your training. Here's why!

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that cable and satellite television is fueling strong job growth in the film and video industries. In fact, job growth in the film industry is better than the average of all industries, and are expected to grow another 17 percent through the year 2014.

Through The Lens: Working in Film and Cinematography
Jobs expected to provide the best prospects are in film are technical in nature, such as video editing, multimedia art and animation, computer-generated imaging, and sound engineering. Other areas are also growing, however, and not just in Hollywood. While the majority of film jobs are still in locales like Los Angeles and New York, productions are increasingly taking place outside these traditional backdrops of great cinematography. Other cities in the United States are becoming popular choices. The BLS reports that more films are being produced internationally as well, especially in English-speaking countries such as Canada. This film exportation is typically motivated by cost.

Film School: A Script for Career Success
Scores of film schools have cropped up in recent years. Good news for future students: you don’t have to relocate to Los Angeles to find a good film school. Students can find a quality film program in just about every major metropolitan city, and even some mid-sized ones. Chances are there's one near you.

When choosing a film school, consider the area of the film industry in which you'd like to. Are you interested in a career in cinematography, for example? If so, you'll want to make sure your future film school offers a variety of courses that relate to shooting and editing film and video. Hands-on experience in whatever craft interests you is a must, whether it's computer animation or film direction and production.
