 Description

In 1993, we started Capella University with a vision of creating new educational opportunities for working adults'a vision we think is terribly important now, in the age of knowledge." Steve Shank, CEO and founder of Capella University

In 1993, online education was still in its infancy'the Internet itself was hardly more than a network of government researchers and "tech" adventurers. But Steve Shank and his partners saw the Internet as the ideal medium for delivering education to busy adults.

"At that time they were a hugely underserved market. There was really nothing in place to bridge the gap between working adults and higher education," said Shank. "We set out to create a university that embodies the best principles of adult and distance learning. In 1993, with state authorization to grant degrees, Capella University was launched.

Though not first to market with the idea, Capella University is largely responsible for creating the online education category. Capella simultaneously developed technologies, converted skeptical educators and regulators and built a reputation for credibility among learners and their employers. In 1997, Capella received accreditation from the North Central Association.

Why are learners choosing Capella?
Capella has created a learner-centered experience that makes the most of the interactive and open-ended nature of the Internet. Online delivery has allowed students to overcome traditional barriers such as time and place. But most importantly, Capella has created an experience for learners that is transformative. Today, thousands of working adults have realized their dreams because of this amazing fusion of education and technology.
