Creating an Effective Online Marketing Strategy

By Kelly Richardson
Career Colleges Columnist

The failure of online ventures and new businesses is often caused by the lack of a marketing plan. Without this critical business strategy, your efforts will be disorganized at best. Here are some things to keep in mind when you create a marketing strategy for your next online campaign.

The design of a marketing strategy is not as complicated at it may first appear. Think of your marketing strategy as a wheel on a bicycle. The product or service that is being sold is the wheel. The spokes of the tire represent the various marketing techniques that can be employed for any given campaign. And the forward momentum is, of course, profits and growth. In order to hold that tire in place and keep it moving forward, you need lots of spokes. The good thing is that once those spokes are in place, they'll stay there as you continue to add more. Keep these basic concepts in mind.

Inventing the Wheel: Possible Marketing Strategies

  • Search Engines. Start by opening a pay-per-click campaign with one of the major search engines.
  • Open Directories. Getting listed with one of the manual search directories is crucial for your success.
  • Back Linking. One-way back links that point to your site are a great way to increase your traffic levels.
If you want to add some credibility to your resume and perhaps gain some new clients in the process, earning an online marketing degree is the way to go. There are several business and technical schools that offer this fairly new program.

Earn an Online Marketing Degree

  • Spare Time Studies. You can complete your online marketing degree requirements on your own schedule.
  • Theory and Application. You will learn the basic theories behind marketing strategies and then apply them to real-life situations.
  • Financial Aid. Many online programs will help you finance your marketing education while earning your degree.
In our commercial society, marketing pros have the upper hand. Become one of these elite businesspeople when you earn this valuable degree.
