By Stanley Rubenti Career Colleges Columnist Trade schools--sometimes called career colleges or vocational schools--help busy professionals wanting to get ahead, recent high school graduates want a streamlined education, and those who have taken lengthy breaks from the workforce. In a relatively short amount of time (anywhere from several months to two years), you can master the skills you'll need to launch a new career in massage therapy, automotive engineering, nursing, paralegal work, or computer science, just to name a few. Are Trade Schools Really Worth It? According to the popular online financial site marketwatch.com, trade schools provide you with a 70 percent chance or greater of landing a job in your field upon graduation. And because your field will be specialized, your starting salary should be well above those of regular high school graduates. In fact, about 1.5 million students from trade schools helped push industry revenues up from $10.3 billion in 2001 to $11.6 billion in 2002. The number of new business that trade school graduates have created has probably risen substantially more since then. When you walk into a doctor's office, for instance, almost everyone you meet with (nurses, orderlies, technicians, receptionists, etc.) graduated from a trade school. The only exception, of course, is the doctor. Earning an Online Degree from a Trade School The online degree phenomenon has melded nicely with trade schools. eLearning seems to be extremely well-suited for mastering various technical skills, such as providing health care, machinery repair, or working with computers. Earning an online degree through an elearning program also helps bring tuition prices down considerably more. Given that trade schools are usually cheaper than most four-year liberal arts programs anyway, these extra savings really add up. If either time or money is a major concern, consider the benefits of pursuing an online degree through an elearning trade school.
