Health Care Jobs On the Rise

By Sarah Clark

In 2004, the medical industry accounted for a record 13.5 million, and health care jobs are expected to grow by 27 percent through 2014. Want a piece of the action?

Why such strong job growth? It's due in part to baby boomers retiring from their current health care jobs. It's a double whammy – not only will they vacate their positions, but will require more medical care themselves as they age. Advances in medical technology also play a role--new drugs, equipment, and techniques are in high demand.

Which Health Care Career Is Right For You?

You recognize that the health care field is brimming with opportunity, but how do you choose the path that's right for you? There are many interesting careers in health care, from doctors and nurses to radiologists and medical technicians. First, decide how much time and money you're willing to invest in your education. You can spend a decade or more getting the credentials needed to put an M.D. after your name. Meanwhile, a few semesters at a community college will land you a dental hygienist gig.

Take some time to think about what you enjoy doing. Would you embrace the pressures and stress associated with a job in an emergency room or trauma ward? Would you rather work directly with patients or process paperwork, make appointments, and handle health insurance claims? Don’t shy away from the tough questions--they will help decide which health care career best suits you.

You'll also need to consider the accessibility of health care career training. Does a local school, college or university offer the courses you need? If not, consider getting your degree online.

Many health care jobs require limited training and education. If you want to quickly break into a growing industry, consider a health care career today.
