Online Business Schools in a Flat World

By Stanley Rubenti
Career Colleges Columnist

In Thomas Friedman's best-selling book, The World Is Flat, he highlights some of the amazing trends that are leveling the economic playing field globally. Barriers to entry in education, business, entertainment, and science are being smashed in both developed and developing countries. While there is much to celebrate, Americans could fall behind in areas they once dominated.

Between 2004 and 2005, for example, the number of Indian nationals taking the American-based GMAT test climbed by almost 20 percent. This staggering figure will only increase in places like India, China, and Brazil as more and more students embrace online business schools and universities.

Stay with the Trend Through an Online University
One of the reasons the online university phenomenon has spread is because broadband Internet access is becoming more affordable. With a standard PC, dedicated line, and some free time, almost anyone can learn the essentials required for success in the business world. And business is not the only discipline that benefits from online schools. Medicine, engineering, Web design, graphic design, mathematics, and history programs are easily accessible almost anywhere in the world. Online schools provide convenience for students all across the globe.

Are Online Schools Good for You?
Keep in mind that online schools are not for everyone. Before enrolling in an online university, it is worth reviewing whether or not you meet the following criteria:
  • Do you have access to a computer on a regular basis?
  • Do you have access to Internet on a regular basis?
  • Are you self-motivated and driven?
  • Do you enjoy not having to commute on a daily basis?
  • Would you like to stay current with the latest innovations in education, learning, and career advancement?
  • Would you like to learn anonymously, so that friends, family members, and employees don't necessarily know that you're going back to school?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, an online university might be for you. They provide unbelievable convenience, freedom, and flexibility when it comes to learning new skills that you can market successfully in tomorrow's flat workplace.
